Wool Rug Cleaning

Wool rugs can look tired because of loose grit, everyday soil, spills or a combination of these. The appropriate clean depends on more than the fibre name. We assess the pile, foundation, dyes, backing, fringe and existing wear before deciding how your wool rug should be treated.

Start with the whole construction

A wool label describes the pile but may not tell the whole story. The foundation can contain other fibres, the backing may be glued, and an older rug may have repairs or weakened areas. A hand-knotted rug and a tufted rug therefore need different considerations even when both have wool on the surface.

Tell us about any loose edges, shedding backing or areas that have become stiff. A photograph of the front, reverse and label helps the initial enquiry. Final decisions depend on inspection, not a photograph alone.

Dry soil removal is part of the job

Dust and grit can settle within the pile and foundation. Washing a rug without considering that loose soil can make the job more difficult. We assess suitable preparation, including dry soil removal, before the main cleaning stage.

The amount of preparation and the equipment used depend on the rug’s strength and construction. A robust modern rug may tolerate handling that would be inappropriate for a fragile older piece. The aim is to choose a useful process without imposing unnecessary stress.

Colour testing and a suitable cleaning method

Colour stability matters before introducing cleaning products and moisture. Some rugs contain unstable dyes, previous treatments or areas that behave differently from the rest. We assess those risks and explain any limitations that affect the proposed clean.

Where washing is appropriate, the method and products are selected for the rug. We do not treat a wool rug as an interchangeable item or assume that a household carpet shampoo is suitable. Strong products and excessive rubbing can create changes that cleaning will not reverse.

Stains, odours and permanent changes

A wool rug with pet accidents needs a different discussion from one carrying ordinary dust. Identify the areas affected and tell us what you have already tried. A stain may extend beyond the visible surface, and its age and earlier treatment can affect the outcome.

Some marks are changes to the fibre or colour rather than removable soil. Sun fading, bleaching, wear and some dye transfers can remain after cleaning. We explain this distinction so the expected result is clear before work proceeds.

Drying and care after cleaning

Drying is part of the cleaning process. A rug needs appropriate moisture removal and drying conditions for its construction. A surface that feels dry does not always tell you what is happening deeper in the rug.

At home, vacuum according to the rug manufacturer’s guidance and take care around fringe and loose edges. Rotate the rug when practical to distribute wear. Avoid leaving dampness trapped beneath it and check that the floor is dry before putting the rug back.

Request a wool rug quote

Send the length and width, your postcode and a description of the condition. Include label photographs and tell us if the rug is hand-knotted, tufted, antique or of special sentimental value, if known. We will discuss collection availability, the proposed assessment and the quote.

If there is a fresh spill, ask for advice before applying several products. Gentle blotting and a clear description of what happened are more useful than making the area larger with aggressive treatment.

Your questions, answered.

Can every wool rug be washed?

No single method suits every wool rug. Construction, colour stability and condition determine the available options.

Will cleaning stop shedding?

Cleaning does not correct every cause of shedding. Tell us whether shedding is new or accompanied by backing damage so it can be assessed.

Should I use a hired carpet cleaner?

Do not assume a machine intended for fitted carpet suits your rug. Check the manufacturer’s care instructions and seek advice, especially where dyes, backing or fibre are uncertain.
