Read the label without relying on it alone
Labels may identify polypropylene, polyester, nylon or a fibre blend. They can also include care restrictions that should be respected. Send a photograph of the label with your quote request and mention whether there is a non-slip or glued backing.
The pile fibre is only one part of the rug. Backing deterioration, glued components and attached trim can limit the treatment even when the surface appears hard-wearing. If the reverse is powdery, sticky or separating, tell us before collection.
Everyday dirt and residues
A rug can feel flattened, dull or sticky after a period of normal use. Dry soil, cooking residues, spills and cleaning products may all contribute. The assessment considers these sources so the process addresses the actual condition rather than masking it with fragrance.
Long-pile and shaggy rugs can hold material deep inside the pile. Preparation and suitable soil removal matter before the main clean. We also consider whether the construction can tolerate the proposed handling and moisture.
Stain resistance has limits
A rug sold as stain-resistant can still acquire marks. Oily residues, dye transfer and previously applied products may behave differently from a recent water-based spill. Give us the substance and the time it happened if you know them.
Some visible changes are permanent damage. Heat distortion, flattened or worn pile and colour loss are not simply dirt. We explain what cleaning is intended to improve and where a result cannot be promised.
Pet accidents need a specific conversation
If a pet has used the rug, identify the affected area and whether this happened once or repeatedly. Tell us about odour treatments, enzyme products or disinfectants already applied. The visible surface may not show the full area affected.
A pleasant fragrance after a home treatment does not show that the source has been removed. We assess the construction and contamination together and discuss a suitable approach and realistic limitations.
Avoid soaking a rug on the floor
Using a carpet machine or repeated bowls of water can leave moisture in the backing or against the floor. A synthetic pile does not mean the entire rug or the floor underneath can safely tolerate that moisture.
For immediate spill care, blot gently and follow any manufacturer guidance. Avoid rubbing, strong heat and mixed cleaning products. Ask us for advice if the fibre, backing or original spill is uncertain.
Prepare your quote request and aftercare
Measure the main rug body, give your postcode and list any problem areas. Tell us whether furniture normally rests on it and whether there are access considerations for collection. We confirm price and collection and return arrangements before booking.
After cleaning, follow the rug’s care instructions, vacuum regularly and attend to fresh spills promptly. Check that the floor beneath is clean and dry. A suitable underlay can help with positioning, but it should be appropriate for the rug and floor rather than assumed safe for every surface.
Your questions, answered.
Can all synthetic rugs go in a washing machine?
No. Size, backing, adhesives and the manufacturer’s instructions matter. Do not assume that synthetic pile makes a rug machine-washable.
Can you clean a shaggy rug?
We can assess it. Send the dimensions, label and a photograph, and mention any backing damage or persistent odour.
Does stain-resistant mean every stain will come out?
No. Results depend on the substance, fibre, construction, time and previous treatments.
