Pet Odour & Urine in Rugs

Pet accidents can affect more than the top of a rug. Liquid may reach the foundation, backing or floor, and repeated incidents can be difficult to judge from appearance alone. A useful treatment starts with an honest history and an assessment of the rug’s material and condition.

Tell us where and how often it happened

Point out the affected area, including any places that look normal but smell. Say whether the incident is recent, whether it happened repeatedly and whether you noticed moisture beneath the rug. Those details help us understand the potential extent of the problem.

If you have more than one pet or you are unsure of the exact source, explain that too. We do not need a perfect diagnosis from you. We need the best available information before choosing an approach.

Why a surface spray may not settle it

A fragrance can temporarily change what you notice without removing the source. Products may also leave residues in the pile. If contamination reached the foundation or backing, a surface-only treatment may not reach the full affected area.

Tell us the products used and whether the rug was soaked or machine-cleaned at home. Do not combine more products in an attempt to overpower the smell. Mixing treatments can create additional uncertainty and potential damage.

The rug still determines the method

Wool, delicate woven rugs and glued-backed pieces have different constraints. The fibre, dye stability and construction need assessment alongside the odour problem. A method suitable for one rug may be inappropriate for another.

We discuss suitable cleaning and any additional treatment after assessing those factors. We do not promise complete odour removal before seeing the rug or assume that a stronger chemical is always the answer.

Separate staining from odour

The odour and visible mark may not improve to the same extent. Some accidents cause changes to dyes or fibres, so a mark can remain even after appropriate cleaning. Conversely, a rug can smell without having a clearly visible stain.

Existing wear, weakened backing and earlier home treatments can further limit the result. We explain relevant limitations and agree expectations before work goes ahead.

Check the floor and underlay too

If liquid passed through the rug, the floor or underlay may also require attention appropriate to those materials. Cleaning the rug alone does not resolve a separate source underneath it. Check carefully and follow the relevant floor or underlay manufacturer’s advice.

Do not put a cleaned rug back onto a damp or contaminated surface. Tell us if you are uncertain where the smell comes from so we can keep the discussion focused on the rug and avoid promising that rug cleaning will solve a different problem.

What to do before you contact us

For a fresh accident, remove what you can by gentle blotting with a clean absorbent cloth. Avoid scrubbing and do not add heat. Keep pets away from the area while you seek advice and follow the rug’s own care guidance.

Send the dimensions, material or label photograph, postcode and a brief account of the accident and treatments used. Mention if the rug is still wet. We will discuss assessment, collection availability, price and realistic expectations for the work.

Your questions, answered.

Can you guarantee the smell will disappear?

No result can be guaranteed before assessment. Repeated contamination, backing condition and other sources can affect the outcome.

Should I spray it before collection?

Avoid adding more products. Tell us what you have already applied and ask for advice appropriate to the rug.

Why can I still see a mark after cleaning?

Some pet accidents change the fibre or dye. Permanent colour changes are different from removable soil.
